When you examine your teeth and gums in the mirror, do you believe them to be healthy? According to a 2015 survey, 30% of adults in the United States rated their oral health as fair or poor. If you are not sure if you have a healthy smile, your dentist in Coral Gables, Dr. Bushdid, will look at 5 key indicators that will determine the status of your dental health.
1. Healthy Gums
Healthy gums are pink in color and have a firm texture. They should not be painful, appear red or white, or swollen while holding your teeth firmly in place, so they do not wiggle.
To evaluate the health of your gums, Dr. Bushdid will look for signs of gum disease, such as redness, swelling, or bleeding. In addition, the gum tissue will be probed to check the depth of the pockets between the tissue and your teeth.
2. Strong Teeth and Restorations
Although your teeth may appear to be strong, you may have areas of weakened enamel or small cracks. Not to mention, your restorations maybe starting to lose their bond with your tooth.
During your routine examination, Dr. Bushdid will check the strength of your teeth to look for areas of excessive wear, such as from acid erosion or pressure from grinding your teeth. The smallest of cracks and crevasses will be evaluated to detect any areas of concern before they turn into a bigger problem, such as a lost restoration or cavity.
3. Pleasant Breath
Your breath is a large indicator of your oral health. If you suffer from chronic bad breath, it is often the result of an underlying problem, like decay, infection, or unusually high levels of bacteria in your mouth. To stop the smell and to restore your oral health, the cause of the odor will need to be treated.
4. Healthy Oral Tissues
Your oral health involves more than just your teeth and gums. It also includes the tissues and structures within your mouth, like your tongue, lips, cheeks, and palate. The tissues should be pink, moist, and firm. If there are any sores, rough patches, or swelling, it is often a sign of a problem. In addition to checking the health of your teeth and gums, Dr. Bushdid will also look for areas of concern with the tissues, such as signs of oral cancer.
5. Alignment and Bite
The proper alignment of your teeth and bite are important for more than just aesthetic purposes. They also influence your dental health and your quality of life. If there are any abnormalities with either, it can increase your risk for tooth decay, gum disease, or disorders of the temporomandibular joint. As a result, you may require orthodontic intervention.
