What are Crowns and Bridges?
A crown, also known as a cap, is designed to fully encapsulate a tooth. Dr. Bushdid may recommend a crown to strengthen a fractured or otherwise damaged tooth; to protect a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy; cover a discolored or misshaped tooth; replace a large filling; and to attach a bridge.
Bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. They literally bridge the gap that missing teeth leave. Bridges are bonded to the natural teeth on either side of the empty space. These teeth, called abutments, are covered with crowns in order to serve as anchors for the bridge. A false tooth, called a pontic, is attached to the crowns that cover the abutments.
To make sure your crown and bridge fit perfectly, Dr. Bushdid takes an impression of your teeth after they’ve been prepared. Our trustworthy dental lab uses this impression to make your crown and bridge. Dr. Bushdid will also determine the right color for your crown and bridge, so you'll have a prosthetic that matches the shade of your existing teeth. While your permanent crown and bridge are fabricated in the lab, a temporary will be put in place. When the permanent crown or bridge is ready, you’ll return to our office where Dr. Bushdid will remove the temporary, and the new crown and/or bridge will be adhesively bonded over your prepared tooth or teeth.
